CRID and PAHO offer the Ministries of Health a New Information Tool
Appropriate management of those aspects related to health in emergency and disaster situations, constitutes one part of the conditions for improving the health and general rehabilitation of affected populations. In this context, the information and knowledge available regarding the thematic scope dealing with health and disaster risk management contribute to the processes in which planning, country-level health system organisation, training for emergency response and hospital care also intervene.
The Ministries of Health, as governing bodies on which the responsibility falls for developing national capacities in the aforementioned aspects, constitute part of the stakeholders that demand day to day information resources and all that contributes to their health plans and lines of effort in risk management.
With this objective in mind, the Regional Centre on Disaster Information for Latin America and the Caribbean (CRID), and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO), have placed at the disposition of Ministries of Health the Basic Virtual Library for Disaster Risk Management for Ministries of Health, whereby they can access a selection of information resources dealing with the main realms of action for health in emergency and disaster management.
This new tool will allow both the specialised user as well as the tyro in this field of action to download and share whenever he or she wants and totally free of charge: guides, manuals, plans, reports, chronicles, research, lessons learned, case studies, etc. All this as well as delving deeper into the topical categories offered.
CRID and PAHO/WHO invite the Ministries of Health to make use of this tool and integrate it into their national information and communication platforms and regional initiatives in disaster risk management where they form a part.

New Guide for Post-Earthquake Psychosocial Support for Schools
Support document for teaching personnel, social/school promoters and humanitarian response personnel
The Guide Propuesta operativa de apoyo psicosocial escolar en situación de post terremoto: La experiencia de San Marcos, Guatemala was prepared within the framework of the project on “Response to the humanitarian crises caused by the climate drought and earthquake in Guatemala”, which occurred on 7 November 2012. The project was executed by Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI), in consortium with Oxfam, in the Departments of Baja Verapaz, Chiquimula and San Marcos, in Guatemala.
The Guide is the product of the Guaranteed Psychosocial Activity for the Damaged Schools, which formed part of the intervention programme under this project, together with those of reconstruction, training on preparedness, disaster response and social audits.
This activity was the responsibility of the team of promoters from Coopi, which contributed by providing support to a total of 2813 children in 25 different communities in 4 municipalities. The work carried out paid special attention to the presence of girls, important in a context of female marginalisation, gender violence and scant access to women’s rights.
